Media language
1) How are the cover lines written to make the audience want to buy the magazine?
They use a lot of name checks to attract fans of the celebrities or people interested in celebrities lives.
They use rhetorical questions and bold statements to attract people that like gossip and drama.
It shows advertisements to attract people that love shopping
2) What are the connotations of the Heat colour scheme on this particular front cover?
pink - to attract females as they are their target audience
yellow - to make it bold
3) How are images used to create interest in the magazine? Find three reasons for your answer. (E.g. paparazzi images or aspects of mise-en-scene such props, costume, make-up, body position, facial expression etc.)
Photos of celebrities may attract people who like the celebrities or want to know who they are/what they are like
The photos also make the magazine eye-catching as it means that they include a range of colours
The paparazzi shots also suggest scandal as if the stories were good things about them they probably would have done a photoshoot
4) What differences can you find between the use of design and typography between Tatler and Heat? List at least three differences and explain the effect on audiences.
Tatler uses more serif and heat uses more sans serif
Heat uses more images and text possibly to advertise the magazine further by showing more stories the magazine uses
Tatler has a more fixed colour scheme with about 4 colours being used but heat has a range of colours due to the large amount of images on the cover
Media Representations
1) What type of celebrities appear on the front cover of Heat? List them here.
Victoria Beckham
Royal Family
Cheryl Cole
2) How are celebrities represented in Heat? (Positively? Negatively? Reinforcing or challenging stereotypes?)
Celebrities are represented negatively and reinforce stereotypes
Heat talks a lot about scandals, gossip and drama
reinforces the stereotype that men cheat
Reinforces the stereotype that women like to shop and are feminine
3) How are women represented on the cover of Heat? Think about both images and cover lines here.
Women are represented as feminine by the use of pinks and reds and the photos used
Women are represented negatively through the fact that it talks about scandals e.g. "posh caught out! Secretive star accused of lying to everyone"
4) How do Heat and Tatler represent social class? What different social classes can you find in the features and celebrities on the cover? (E.g. middle/upper class / working class)
Heat is very low brow:
Includes a lot of celebrities
Includes a lot of gossip
Includes someone from a reality show
...so it is aimed at the working class
Tatler is high brow:
Includes celebrities who are members of the aristocracy
Includes information about politics
One central image of a celebrity who is a marchioness
...so it is aimed at the upper class
